What is the difference in feel between Southsea deckchair cotton fabric and Southsea deckchair acrylic or textilene?

Posting date: 15th March 2010 13:05

A customer who by his own admission always left his director's chairs or tennis chairs out in the rain or sun all season, asked if there was problems with fade on the Southsea Director's chairs.

I advised that the cotton fabric was the most comfortable fabric, but like all printed cotton, would be subject to fade if left out in the way described above. It is good quality, but will fade quicker if left exposed to the elements repeatedly.

Alternative fabrics are available:

  • Acrylic - this is best option in my view, as it is still comfortable but hardier than the cotton. It is more expensive, but is the fabric of choice for commercial outlets who need hardy furniture
  • Textilene - this is a heavy duty plastic fabric, again used by commercial outlets, but less comfortable and less appealing to look at than acrylic.

So the final answer is that there is a bit of a difference in feel - the cotton is softer and more absorbent - but there a fair number of people who won't be able to tell the difference.
