Are picnic backpacks more popular than picnic baskets?

I do get asked this question alot by people choosing a present for someone else, especially if it is a gift for a wedding or anniversary, for example.
So the answer..... well in general, I would say that it has to come down to the backpack. Picnic baskets are popular mainly with an older generation, who are less likely to be hiking. And we are much more likely to send a traditional picnic basket abroad, compared to a backpack, often to ex-pats feeling rather nostalgic. Picnic backpacks have far less of the "special occasion" and ritual about them, but at the end of the day, they are lightweight, easy to clean, smaller and easier to carry. So practicality wins over style. If buying a present, you have to think which your recipient would most like as a present: style or easy of use?
